The Seventh Dimension Bookstore is a small independent bookstore specialized in Comic Books and Graphic Novels in Funchal (the capital of Madeira Island, a tiny portuguese island in the atlantic, near Africa) that has been opened since 2004. Even if the place is tiny, they organize lots of events to gather the local community of comic book readers, aspiring artists, nerds, geeks, otakus, mangakas, cosplayers, gamers, goths and other creative people.
This photo was taken during their 2010 Halloween Party (where they decorated the place with cobwebs and served “jell-o brains”). A nice, unexpected and fun place, in an island with 286 sq mi and 250,000 inhabitants.
Location: 1930 1st Ave, Seattle WA
I stumbled across Peter Miller Books while on a trip to Seattle. They have cool office supplies, art books, travel guides (focusing on architecture) and lots of amazing graphic design and architecture books. Lots to look at here! They’re near downtown, so check them out if you’re in the Seattle area!

The Strand
Location: New York City
Website: http://www.strandbooks.com/
Opened in 1927
I went to New York a few months ago, which means a pilgrimage to The Strand. When you approach, the awning reads “18 Miles of Books”. This is true. There are three floors of books, which will keep you happy for days on end. An absolute must see for any book lover!
(Sorry for the lag in posting - moving and being in school and working full time has kept me away from bookstores. But don’t forget that you can submit photos and stories of your favorite local bookstores!)
Ok, so the above photo is not from a bookstore. It’s actually one of the rare book reading rooms in the New York Public library. Wouldn’t you love to spend a few hours reading there?
I wanted to let you know that you can submit photos and stories about your favorite independent and used books bookstore. I’d really love hear about bookstores around the country and around the world. Just click the submit link (over on the right) and I’ll queue them up!
And if you think that local bookstores are an important part of the community, please do consider recommending this blog for Tumblr’s Books category!

Name: Bell’s Books
Location: Palo Alto, CA
Website: http://www.bellsbooks.com
Opened in 1953
Bell’s Books is a beautiful used bookstore in downtown Palo Alto. I love the shelves of books stacked all the way up to the high ceilings, the collection of rare books, and the creaky wooden floors. The window displays are seasonal and wonderfully creative.
